Here is a list of some standards and contemporary classical hymns and chants to invite you into the Lenten season.
WEEK 1
Again We Keep this Solemn Fast-Traditional
I never used to sing this classic hymn during Lent. It wasn't until young people said it was the hymn which told them it was Lent. When I sing it or hear it now, I have to agree with them.
Gracious God-Jessie Mannibusan
A great contemporary piece. It draws you into the Lenten season with your eyes focused on the Lord for the strength to face the suffering in our heart and finding the mercy in God.
WEEK 2
Purify my Heart-Brian Doerkson
A prayerful hymn to invite the Lord into your heart and to change your life.
There is a Longing-Anne Quigley
A prayerful hymn that expresses the yearning in our hearts to know God and his aid to help with the injustices in the world.
WEEK 3
Come to the Water-John Foley
The readings for this week, especially if your reading from Cycle A or the scrutiny readings, illustrates God's invitation to come to Him.
These Alone are Enough-Dan Schutte
A St Ignatius of Loyola prayer set to this simple and beautiful hymn. During Lent, I always remember that the relationship God offers is enough.
WEEK 4
Open My Eyes-Jessie Manibusan
With a visual of the senses, a great prayerful piece asking for the Lord to see and hear like God.
You Alone
Sometimes we forget the divinity of our Lord. This is another piece to not only recognize the great relationship God offers each of us, but our response to acknowledge nothing in this world is greater than God.
WEEK 5
At the Cross Her Station Keeping-Traditional
Stations of the Cross. Way of the Cross. Walking with Mary. This traditional piece has it all.
Empty and Beautiful-Matt Maher
I wouldn't use it for mass, but if I was on a Lenten retreat or needed something in adoration, this is the one that I would use.
WEEK 6
Crux Fideles-Traditional Chant
Sing it in Latin or English and you will sing of our Salvation in Christ. Once you get find the pattern and the right rhythm, it draws you into the great mystery and joy of Holy Week.
O Sacred Head Surrounded-Traditional
I still cry, especially when the right tempo is found.
Song of the Cross-Anna DaCosta and Susan Hoo Kong Taylor
Sentimental and joyous. The hymn to remember that the crucifixion is not the end, but the path to our Salvation.
